Hyundai to build ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure under E-pit brand

Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled a plan to build high-speed electric car charging infrastructure across the country as the South Korean auto giant shifts its business focus to eco-friendly vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Co. said on Tuesday that it aims to build a total of 120 ultra-fast chargers at its charging stations under a new brand E-pit by the end of 2021.

To begin with, the automaker plans to install 72 EV chargers at 12 expressway rest stops in April and 48 more such equipment at eight charging points in urban areas by the end of the year. If successful, the company said it will further expand its charging infrastructure across the nation.

“Starting this year, we aim to establish a Korean charging ecosystem by launching charging platforms throughout the country,” said a Hyundai official.

The E-pit charging points, inspired by the pit stops of Formula One auto racing  – a place for refueling, repairs and mechanical adjustments – will offer EV drivers with fast, easy and convenient services, according to Hyundai Motor.

The company said a Hyundai electric car equipped with an 800-volt system will be charged to 80% within 18 minutes at the E-pit charging stations. Its ultra-fast charging capability will allow a Hyundai electric car to run about 100 km on a five-minute charge, it said.

For enhanced convenience, the automotive group said it will also introduce a mobile app that enables user accreditation, digital payment and digital queue management.

Hyundai said the E-pit charging system won an award at the 2021 Red Dot Design Award in the product design category.

EV ROADMAP FOR HYUNDAI, KIA

Hyundai Motor Group announced last December its long-term plan to have introduced 23 fully electric models and sell 1 million units a year globally by 2025, based on its own Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

In February this year, Hyundai Motor debuted a new, all-electric IONIQ 5, the first model under its standalone electric vehicle sub-brand.

The IONIQ 5, a mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV), is the first car to sit on the E-GMP that will underpin all forthcoming electric cars from both Hyundai and sister firm Kia Corp.

Earlier this month, Kia also showcased teaser images and video clips of EV6 – its first dedicated electric vehicle built on the E-GMP.

Kia plans to make the world premiere of EV6 online at the end of March.
