Samsung creates big data center under direct CEO control

Samsung Electronics Co. has launched a Big Data Center in a move to improve the use of big data in the development, marketing and sales of smartphones and TVs. The center will be directly controlled by the company's chief executive officers.

The South Korean electronics giant also aims to streamline its big data-related resources to boost its analysis and forecasting capabilities. Big data refers to large-scale data formulated via digital platforms, such as social media networks.

On Feb. 18, the company announced in a regulatory filing that it has set up a big data center that will report directly to the top executives. The new organization, created during the company reshuffling last December, is set to work closely with the IT, mobile and consumer electronics divisions.

The center will be led by Jang Woo-seung, a big data expert who joined Samsung Electronics to oversee big data-related operations in April 2019. Jang previously worked at e-commerce giant Amazon in the US as a senior principal research scientist and taught at the University of Missouri.

SAMSUNG CONSOLIDATES BIG DATA RESOURCES

The increased importance of big data in drafting product strategies led to the establishment of the center. Samsung Electronics' popular BESPOKE refrigerator line as well as its The Sero auto-rotating screen TV were both conceived via big data analysis.

Although big data was becoming more and more used in the company, until now Samsung Electronics did not have an exclusive organization dedicated to managing big data strategy or analysis.

In 2013, the company's IT & mobile department set up a big data center, but it was scrapped a year later. Also, the big data experts at the company were scattered across various departments.

"We set up the Big Data Center to consolidate our resources under the same roof," said a Samsung official. "The center is in charge of devising strategies on product development and sales based on big data," the official explained.

STRATEGY AND INNOVATION CENTER MOVED TO SEMICON UNIT

Meanwhile, the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) has been transferred to the devices solutions (DS) department. Previously, the center was directly controlled by the company's top executives.

The Silicon Valley-based SSIC focuses on identifying and securing next-generation technologies. The center invests in promising startups via the Samsung Catalyst Fund.

The transfer is largely owing to the resignation of its director Sohn Young-kwon who had served as the company's chief strategy officer and led the acquisition of Harman International Industries.

As part of the reshuffling, Samsung Electronics also created a sustainability management center under the direct control of the divisional CEOs, alongside setting up sustainability management offices in each department to embody sustainability in the company's products and services.
