Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled interior images of the IONIQ 5, the first model under its standalone electric vehicle sub-brand, on Feb. 15, featuring a spacious interior and a sliding center console.

IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s first battery-fueled EV model to utilize its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) unveiled last December, as the South Korean automotive group is gearing up to challenge Tesla’s dominance in South Korea’s EV market.

It sets itself apart from other midsize crossovers, especially those with internal combustion engines and conventional steer-by-wire systems, because the E-GMP allows for an elongated wheelbase and a flat floor, Hyundai said in a statement.

The conventional center console was replaced with a “universal island,” which can be slid back and forth, enabling the driver and passengers to enter and exit the car on either side when parked in a narrow spot.

The flat floor allows the center console to slide back and forth. The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with leg rests, allowing passengers to relax while their vehicle is being recharged. All seats can be operated and repositioned, making it easier for adults in the front to care for children and pets seated in the rear. Hyundai said the interior design was inspired by a “Living Space” theme.

“The long wheelbase is translated to a new dimension of space. We designed this special space as a perfect place to recharge; your home away from home,” SangYup Lee, senior vice president and head of Hyundai Global Design Center, said in the statement.

The vehicle interior is furnished with sustainable materials and textiles, such as eco-processed leather, bio paint as well as natural and recycled fibers.

IONIQ 5 is set to make its official debut during a virtual world premiere event on Feb. 23. During the event, the South Korean automotive group will unveil further details regarding the features of the IONIQ 5.

The EV houses a flat battery and can run more than 500 kilometers on a single battery charge. It can be recharged by up to 80% of its battery capacity within 18 minutes on a rapid charger.

The South Korean automaker will launch the latest electric model IONIQ 5 in Europe in March and then in Korea from April.

Last year, Hyundai said all of its EVs will fall under a standalone sub-brand called IONIQ in response to fast-growing market demand and accelerate the automotive group’s plan to lead the global EV market. All of the IONIQ-branded cars will sit on Hyundai’s all-electric E-GMP vehicle platform.

Additionally, Hyundai will launch the EV version of its luxury sedan Genesis using the E-GMP platform within the year, with affiliate Kia Corp. preparing to unveil its EV model this year as well.

Last year, Tesla’s EV Model 3 sold over 10,000 units in South Korea, becoming the third best-selling imported car after the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and the BMW 5 Series sedan. Tesla recently released its all-electric, mid-size SUV Model Y, priced at 59.99 million won in South Korea. The Tesla vehicle is eligible for a government subsidy.

General Motors and Volkswagen are also set to unveil their EVs in Korea this year.
