Hyundai Motor Co. has shared a few images of the IONIQ 5, the first model under its standalone electric vehicle sub-brand, ahead of its official reveal next month.
The top South Korean automaker on Jan. 13 released teaser images of the mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV), which will sit on the E-GMP, Hyundai’s platform dedicated for EVs.
The company said in August last year that all of its EVs will fall under a standalone sub-brand called IONIQ in response to fast-growing market demand and accelerate the automotive group’s plan to lead the global EV market.
And last month, Hyundai unveiled the new platform, which will underpin its electric cars in coming years. All of the IONIQ-branded cars will be built on the E-GMP.
Alongside the photos of the IONIQ 5 unveiled on Wednesday, Hyundai also released videos highlighting the latest model’s key features.
The “5 Min Challenge” video highlights IONIQ 5’s ultra-fast charging capability enabling it to drive more than 100 km with only a five-minute charge. The company said its E-GMP cars support fast charging, with an 80% charge from empty possible in just 18 minutes and a maximum distance of 500 km per charge.
Three “Ultimate Camping” videos show that the vehicle can also serve as a generator, providing 3.5 kilowatts of power. In each of the videos, a camper is seen using IONIQ 5’s power to roast a turkey in a large oven, listen to music on high-end audio speakers, and exercise on a treadmill – all at a camping site.
The IONIQ 5's signature design elements include parametric pixels, the smallest unit of digital imaging. The company plans to apply the design to all new models to be released under the IONIQ battery electric vehicle (BEV) brand.

The CUV also features a clamshell hood design, the first among Hyundai cars, and comes with 20-inch wheels, also a first for a Hyundai EV.
The IONIQ 5 will officially debut during a virtual world premiere event in February.

Hyundai Motor Group has said it plans to introduce 23 fully electric models and sell 1 million units a year globally by 2025.
