South Korea's tech giant LG Electronics Inc. announced on Oct. 26 that it has entered into a patent-licensing agreement with Sweden-based Electrolux to provide ice-making technology for refrigerators.

The agreement will allow Electrolux to use LG Electronics' ice-making technology for its French door refrigerators. Details of the agreement have not been disclosed.

French door refrigerators have a double-door fridge space on the top half, with the freezer at the bottom. The layout of the refrigerator raised complaints from users who had to constantly bend over to get ice.

LG Electronics developed and registered a patent for the ice-making technology that allows an ice-maker in the top fridge space. This technology is used in LG Electronics’ French door refrigerators at home and abroad.

LG Electronics holds over 700 globally registered patents related to ice-making technology for refrigerators.

“LG Electronics will be proactive in protecting intellectual property, which is the force behind the company’s leading position in the global home appliance market,” said Jeon Saeng-gyu, executive vice president of LG Electronics.

Founded in 1919, Electrolux is a home appliance company popular in Europe.
