Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s biggest automaker, has begun building an innovation lab in Singapore as part of its efforts to explore new mobility business opportunities.
The automaker held a groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 13 for the construction of the Hyundai Mobility Global Innovation Center. The ceremony was held virtually, with government and company officials attending an online event jointly hosted at Hyundai’s R&D center in Namyang, Korea and the Jurong Town Hall in Singapore.
Projected bird's-eye view of Hyundai Motor's new innovation center in Singapore The facility, aimed at leading a paradigm shift in mobility value chains, is due for completion by the end of 2022, Hyundai said in a statement.
The innovation center "will provide an innovative customer-focused value chain that will promote a paradigm shift in future mobility solutions," Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice Chairman Chung Euisun said in the statement. “We will offer products and services tailored to customer needs.”
Hyundai said the seven-story facility will offer customers a one-stop service center; allowing them to place an order for a car, monitor the production of the vehicle and even test the finished product onsite before delivery.
With its latest lab in Singapore, the automaker aims to expand its global innovation network to Southeast Asia, with such hubs already operating in South Korea, the US, Israel, Germany and China.
The facility in Singapore will also feature an Urban Air Mobility (UAM) landing port as well as solar panels providing the site with clean renewable energy.

He said Singapore’s goal is to have all its vehicles run on cleaner energy in line with its Paris Agreement commitments.
Singapore is one of the world’s most expensive places to buy a car and does not currently have any auto manufacturing capacity. But the city-state plans to phase out gasoline-fueled vehicles by 2040.
