Hyundai Motor Co. has shipped four hydrogen-powered vehicles to Saudi Arabian Oil Co., the world’s largest oil producer, at a time when even the Middle Eastern country is gradually adopting eco-friendly cars.

Hyundai, South Korea’s largest automotive group, said in a statement on Sept. 28 that it shipped two Nexo crossover SUVs and two fuel-cell EV (FCEV) Elec City buses to Saudi Aramco from a port in Ulsan, southeast of Seoul, on Sunday.

This is the first time Hyundai has exported its FCEV buses to overseas markets.

Hyundai Motor and the state-run Saudi oil giant forged a hydrogen partnership in June of last year to supply more hydrogen-fueled electric cars to the Middle Eastern country.

Hyundai said Saudi Aramco will use the four EVs for test driving and other pilot projects. The Elec City bus can run 430 kilometers on a single charge.

The automaker said the shipments are significant in that they are selling vehicles with cleaner fuel to one of the world’s largest petroleum exporters.

Hyundai said it hopes to prove its technological prowess in hydrogen vehicles through the export of the four vehicles to Saudi Aramco.

For its Nexo hydrogen crossover SUVs, the company sold a total of 10,698 vehicles in global markets, including 8,908 units in Korea, from 2018 through August of this year.
