Hyundai Motor Co. has delivered seven hydrogen-powered trucks to Switzerland in its foray into Europe’s eco-friendly commercial vehicle market, the South Korean carmaker said on Oct. 8.

The shipment is part of the 50 fuel cell electric trucks Hyundai plans to supply to Switzerland by year's end, as the automaker seeks to expand the supply of its fuel cell trucks across Europe, including Austria, Germany, Norway and the Netherlands.

The XCIENT Fuel Cell, which Hyundai delivered to seven retail and logistics companies in Switzerland on Oct. 7, is the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck. The seven companies are Coop, Migros, Travego, Galiker Logistics, Camion Transport, Murpf AG and G. Leclerc Transport AG.

The Swiss companies will lease the vehicles on a pay-per-use basis, covering all driving-related costs ranging from charging, insurance and maintenance to repairs.

“Hyundai Motor will quickly expand its presence in Europe’s commercial vehicle market by reducing the initial cost and burden for customers introducing hydrogen electric trucks,” Hyundai said in a statement.

Switzerland plans to install 100 hydrogen charging stations across the country to support the introduction of zero-emissions vehicles, it added.

XCIENT is powered by a 190 kW hydrogen fuel cell system with dual 95 kW fuel cell stacks. Its driving range per charge  is about 400 km, with refueling time for each truck taking approximately 8 to 20 minutes. Hyundai also plans to develop a large electric truck that drives more than 1,000 km per charge.

“The delivery of XCIENT Fuel Cell marks the official entry of Hyundai’s commercial vehicles in the European market, a touchstone for the company’s expansion into the North American and Chinese commercial markets,” it said.

To expand into other European countries, as well as the US and China, the automaker will spend $1.3 billion to boost production capacity of the XCIENT Fuel Cell to 2,000 units per year by 2021. To the European market, it expects to supply 1,600 commercial fuel cell trucks by 2025 and over 25,000 units by 2030.

In China, Hyundai will launch three fuel cell electric truck models: a medium-duty truck in 2022; a heavy-duty truck in a couple of years; and another heavy-duty truck designed solely for the Chinese market. With these three models, Hyundai expects to sell 27,000 hydrogen vehicles by 2030 in China, which aims to have one million hydrogen vehicles on its roads by 2030.

Last month, Hyundai shipped four hydrogen-powered vehicles to Saudi Arabian Oil Co., the world’s largest oil producer.
