LG Uplus to open metaverse for Yonsei Univ. in September

South Korea's LG Uplus Corp. on Wednesday announced the opening in September of Virtual Campus, a metaverse for Yonsei University, one of the nation's top institutions of higher learning, to facilitate contactless education and large-scale events in cyberspace.

The company created the virtual campus through its metaverse platform Uverse. Yonsei said it started planning last month to build the metaverse with LG Uplus to overcome the limits of online education.

In addition to functions such as chats with professors and checks on class status, announcements and schedule, others like the sale of the university's products, decoration of avatars and a user's personal room My Room are included.

The online campus can accommodate up to 1,000 users at the same time through its metaverse auditorium and open-air theater. This also allows the hosting of large-scale events such as lectures by experts, joint support for the university's annual sports tournament versus archrival Korea University and Yonsei's biggest festival Akaraka.

LG Uplus also enhanced the virtual campus' accessibility by linking it with the login function of Yonsei Portal, the university's academic management site. Another online campus that the school's graduates and outsiders can visit is also forthcoming.
