In an industry first, an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) smartphone screen made by Samsung Display has received global certification for its ultra-high brightness of 2,000 nits. One nit is equal to the luminance of one candle per square meter.
The company on Thursday said its screen received the UDR (ultra dynamic range) mark from the international safety certification agency UL at CES 2023, the world's largest exhibition of consumer electronics and IT in Las Vegas.
The mark indicates the display's outstanding brightness.
The screen's acquisition of both the UDR1500 and UDR2000 marks confirms its status as a product with ultra-high luminance capacity of up to 2,000 nits.
The screen's higher brightness translates into better three-dimensional effects and more realistic picture quality using rich color expression.
The screen brightness traits of a smartphone screen are more important than those of a TV or monitor because a smartphone is often used outdoors under bright light.
The company said it improved such traits to allow clear viewing of the screen in a bright outdoor environment while maintaining a consumer level of power consumption.
