Seoul Viosys receives CES Display Innovation Award

Seoul Viosys Co. said on Tuesday that it received the Innovation Award in the display category for a component called "WICOP pixel" at CES 2023, the world's largest home appliance and info-tech trade show.

Seoul Viosys, a subsidiary of Seoul Semiconductor Co., is the only component supplier to receive an innovation award in the display category at CES.

The company was recognized for its display technology that implements the micro-LED with a single chip called WICOP pixel. WICOP pixel is a WICOP-based technology that does not require wires, packages, or lenses, and is the world's first product to complete a single chip by vertically stacking three red, green, and blue (RGB) micro-LEDs.

This layered structure allows ultra-small chip fabrication and reduces the chip fabrication and mounting process by a third. WICOP pixels with a layered structure are considered key technologies of the metaverse such as virtual reality and augmented reality because the light-emitting area is also reduced by one-third and can achieve transparency higher than 90%.

"WICOP is a technology that can be mounted without the gold wire, which is an essential part of all previous LED manufacturing processes. Our company has developed and mass-produced it for the first time in the world. Without WICOP, one of the second-generation core technologies of the LED industry, no one can manufacture mini-LEDs and micro-LEDs," said an official of Seoul Viosys.

Since Lee Jung-hoon, the founder of both Seoul Semiconductor and Seoul Viosys, introduced WICOP technology to reporters gathered at the InterContinental Shanghai Pudong back in September 2015, the technology has been rapidly adopted in home appliances and automobiles.
