Samsung C&T to build world’s largest liquid hydrogen tank

South Korea's Samsung C&T Corp. announced on Sunday it received certification for the world's largest liquid hydrogen storage tank design from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), an internationally accredited certification body.

The tank boasts a 40,000 cubic meter capacity, capable of storing up to 2,800 tons of liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures as low as -252.8 degrees Celsius. This capacity is sufficient to refuel over 500,000 hydrogen cars simultaneously.

The development of liquid hydrogen storage tanks, which must operate at cryogenic temperatures, requires sophisticated design and construction capabilities.

Samsung C&T collaborated with Whessoe, a global leader in designing and manufacturing low-temperature and cryogenic storage tanks, to refine the technology for this DNV-certified project since the start of the year.

The company earned the design certification for various enhancements, notably improving the tank's stability and incorporating a system to prevent the reversion of liquid hydrogen to its gaseous state.

With this certification, Samsung C&T intends to fast-track the growth of its green hydrogen and ammonia business, capitalizing on the advanced design and capabilities of these liquid hydrogen storage tanks.

"This certification will be a driving force for the company's future green business," "said Yoon Jong-Yi, a vice president of Samsung C&T's construction division. "We will continue to develop our technology to secure our business competitiveness."

Samsung C&T is reinforcing its proficiency throughout the hydrogen value chain, which includes the business development, production, storage, and transportation of green hydrogen and ammonia. These elements are recognized as the next wave of clean energy resources.

The company is also engaged in notable projects, such as the Qatar liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the Vietnam Thi Vai LNG terminal.
