Korea’s GS E&C to export hydrogen plant modules to US

GS Engineering & Construction Co. will export hydrogen plant modules to the US, becoming the first South Korean builder for such overseas sales.

GS E&C agreed with a waste-to-hydrogen company SGH2 Energy to supply modules for a green hydrogen production facility in Lancaster, California. The plant, which processes 40,000 tons of waste annually, will be able to produce up to 11 tons of green hydrogen per day, enough to charge 1,700 units of mid-sized hydrogen vehicles, according to GS E&C.

The South Korean construction company said on Monday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with SGH2 Lancaster LLC, a special purpose company for the project.

“This is a deal to produce modules here, then ship and install them there,” said a GS E&C source. “It is significant to succeed in hydrogen plant standardization.”

GS E&C expected to win more orders for similar projects since SGH2 Energy has been working on hydrogen plant business in North America, Europe and Asia.

Modular plants usually allow companies to cut costs, avoid potential delays due to external conditions such as weather, as well as minimize site work and construction time.

“Based on modular technology accumulated in the refinery and gas plant sectors, we can expand our business into the renewable hydrogen plant market,” said Huh Yoon-hong, president of GS E&C’s new business.
