S-1 Corp., a security affiliate of South Korea's Samsung Group, has been expanding its presence into the automated external defibrillator (AED) area amid growing social interest in safety after the Itaewon crowd crush incident last year.

An AED is a portable, life-saving device designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, a medical condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, S-1 recently unveiled its AED model which greatly reduced driving time and enhanced convenience.

In the event of cardiac arrest, it is difficult to prevent ischemic brain damage unless cardiopulmonary resuscitation or an AED is performed within the golden time of 4 minutes.

An AED usually operates only when the left and right electrode pads are attached to a predetermined position.

However, S-1's AED can be used without distinction between left and right, enabling quick and agile response in an emergency.

It usually takes 10 seconds from attaching the AED electrode pads to analyze the heart rhythm and finally to press the "shock" button. In contrast, the S-1 device reduced the analysis time to 2 seconds.

S1 has applied a function that allows self-diagnosis of battery charging status and normal operation every day.

It will also support after-sales service through more than 100 branch offices nationwide while providing AED usage and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training free of charge.

Unveiling the advanced AED model follows S-1's decision to massively distribute AEDs.

In November last year, S-1 signed a business agreement with BGF Retail to install AEDs at more than 16,000 CU convenience stores nationwide.
