Doosan Enerbility Co., a South Korea construction equipment manufacturer, said on Friday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Indonesia Power to supply its low-emission technologies to Indonesia’s largest power generator.

Under the MOU, the two companies will comprehensively cooperate to fuel the coal-fired Suralaya Power Station currently in operation with eco-friendly fuels such as green ammonia.

It was signed during a South Korea-Indonesia business roundtable meeting in Jakarta on Thursday.

The signing ceremony was attended by South Korean Minister for Trade Ahn Dukgeun; Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan; Indonesia Power President Edwin Nugraha Putra; Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT) President Peter Wijaya; and Doosan Enerbility President Jung Yeonin.

The roundtable talks took place on the sidelines of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit to Indonesia for the ASEAN summit 2023.

IRT is a special purpose company jointly owned by Barito Pacific, an Indonesian company for power generation and petrochemical production and Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO).

Back in 2016, Barito Pacific placed a 1.6-trillion-won order ($1.2 billion) with Doosan to build coal-fired Jawa Thermal Power Plant units 9 and 10 in Cilegon on the northwest coast of Java Island, about 120 kilometers from Jakarta, the capital  of Indonesia.

During the roundtable talks on Thursday, Doosan inked an MOU exclusively with IRT to expand the green ammonia supply chain for the two plants in Cilegon.

“Doosan Energy’s various carbon-neutral solutions, such as dual-fuel ammonia, hydrogen turbines and liquefied hydrogen plants, will be an effective alternative for Indonesia’s carbon reduction goals,” Doosan Enerbility President Jung Yeonin said at the signing ceremony.

On Aug. 13, IRT President Peter Wijaya visited Doosan Enerbility headquarters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province and signed a tentative agreement to adopt Doosan’s dual-fuel ammonia technology for Jawa Thermal Power Plant units 9 and 10.

Under the agreement, Doosan will share its ammonia-based dual-fuel system technologies with IRT by 2027.

Back home, Doosan Enerbility in 2022 agreed to join forces with KEPCO and Samsung C&T Corp. to launch dual-fuel green ammonia projects.

Doosan Enerbility, formerly Doosan Heavy Industries Co., is in charge of developing green ammonia dual-fuel boilers and ammonia supply systems for the projects.

Green ammonia refers to ammonia made by using only renewable and carbon-free energy such as hydrogen.
