LS Cable, Hanwha to build S.Korea’s largest offshore wind farm

South Korea's LS Cable & System announced on Wednesday that it has been selected as the priority negotiator for the supply of submarine cables for the Shinan-Ui offshore wind power project being pursued by Hanwha Corp.'s construction unit.

This is the largest domestic offshore wind power project, building a 400-megawatt offshore wind farm in the southeastern waters of Ui Island, Sinan County, South Jeolla Province. The capacity of 400 MW is more than three times the cumulative installed capacity of domestic offshore wind power as of last year, which was 124 MW.

LS Cable will supply all the submarine cables required for the construction of the wind power complex and its connection to the mainland by the second half of 2025. The contract size is estimated to be 100 billion won ($77 million).

Both companies plan to immediately begin contract negotiations on product specifications and other matters with the goal of completion by 2026.

LS Cable and Hanwha Corp.'s construction unit plan to strengthen their cooperation in the domestic offshore wind power generation business, starting with this project.

LS Cable is expanding its investment in offshore projects, including the development of the world's highest-rated 525-kilovolt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables and the construction of an HVDC specialized factory.
