S.Korean firm will provide submarine cables for Changhua Offshore Wind Farm project through Danish company, expecting $2.2 bn worth additional order

LS Cable wins 2 mn contract to supply submarine cables to Taiwan


South Korea's LS Cable & System has secured a 189.2 billion won ($142 million) contract with Orsted, Denmark-based world’s leading offshore wind power company, for supplying submarine cables to Taiwan.

The contract specifically pertains to the Changhua Offshore Wind Farm, slated to become the largest offshore wind farm in the Asia-Pacific region. 

LS Cable will provide 230 kV submarine cables, conducting electrical connection work and performing on-site testing. The contract duration spans From May 25, 2023 to October 4, 2025.

Located off the coast of Changhua in western Taiwan, Changhua Offshore Wind Farm is set to be a significant milestone in Taiwan's renewable energy industry.

After completion at the end of 2025, it will robust capacity of 920 MW. This offshore wind farm is expected to contribute to the generation of clean and sustainable energy.

This latest achievement builds upon LS Cable 's track record of success in Taiwan's offshore wind sector.

Having previously won the contract for supplying extra-high-voltage submarine cables for all eight projects in the first phase of offshore wind farm construction, the accumulated value of contracts since 2019 has reached approximately 1 trillion won ($754 million).

Taiwan's ambitious plans include completing a 5.5 GW wind farm through the first phase by 2025, with further plans to develop an additional 15 GW by 2035.

"We expect to secure further submarine cable orders in Taiwan, potentially worth around 3 trillion won ($2.2 billion)," a LS Cable official said. 

In a strategic move, LS Cable recently acquired a stake in KT Submarine, a company highly specialized in submarine cable installation.
