S.Korea's Daehan Green Power invests in energy superstation biz

South Korea's Daehan Green Power has entered the green hydrogen sector, a new growth engine, through an energy super station project.

The company on Tuesday announced its decision to invest in the project through a combined 25.1% stake by completing equity investments in jointly invested corporations like SK Energy and LS Electric Co..

Daehan Green Power will build and operate rapid charging stations for electric vehicles. Planning and design of 100-kw and 400-kw fast chargers have been completed internally and required procedures like product certification are being prepared. The company said its investment objective is to secure the captive market, or a market with a severely low number of suppliers, for green hydrogen, which is being developed as a new growth engine.

An energy super station refers to the convergence of power generated from solar and hydrogen fuel cells with gas and liquefied petroleum gas charging stations. This refueling center of the future sells petroleum products while also providing renewable energy.

The project's early business model uses a fuel cell injected with liquefied natural gas as the main engine and promotes over the mid- to long term creation of a fuel cell that directly injects hydrogen. Thus this model is expected to play an important role in creating a domestic ecosystem for green hydrogen by creating demand for private hydrogen.

"With this year being our first to promote our global new and renewable energy unit, we are actively pushing ahead solar and wind power ventures at home and abroad and setting up an organization for development and sales of ESS (energy storage system)," a Daehan Green Power source said. "Through this project, we aim to secure a strategic position in green hydrogen, which will eventually emerge as a major axis of new and renewable energy worldwide."
