SK Inc., KEPCO Co. and GS Caltex Corp. are the only South Korean firms among the 77 energy companies listed on the 2022 Fortune Global 500, based on consolidated sales.
The 77 energy companies on the list are from 26 countries, of which China is ranked top with 18 firms, according to the Federation of Korean Industries on Tuesday.
The combined sales of the Chinese energy companies came to $2.3 trillion, accounting for 30.8% of the listed energy companies' total sales.
By comparison, the three Korean energy companies' aggregate sales reached $170.6 million, or 2.3% of the total.
The data indicates that South Korean companies remain smaller players in the growing energy industry.
By sector, energy companies took the biggest share, accounting for 19.4% of the sales of the 500 listed companies among the 21 sectors.
Eleven US energy companies made it on the list. Four companies each from the UK, France, India and Germany are among the listed energy firms.
In terms of the number of companies represented in each industry, the energy industry comes second after the financial services sector, from which 111 companies are on the list.
