Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s No. 2 smartphone maker, said its latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S24 series enjoyed record pre-orders in India in just three days as the South Korean tech giant is trying to reclaim the top position from Apple Inc. in the sector.

Samsung said on Monday that more than 250,000 customers in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, have ordered a Galaxy S24 smartphone since pre-bookings opened in the country on Jan. 18. It took three weeks for its predecessor Galaxy S23 series to achieve the milestone, according to the company.

Samsung unveiled last week the Galaxy S24 series, which is called an “AI phone” as the smartphone is packed with a variety of artificial intelligence features.

“The huge success of Galaxy S24 series demonstrates that Indian consumers are early adopters of new technology,” said Raju Pullan, senior vice president of Samsung India’s mobile experience business, in a statement.

The South Korean company has been expanding its smartphone business in India, the world’s most populous country, by manufacturing key models including the Galaxy S24 Ultras, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24.

Samsung topped the Indian smartphone industry last year with a market share of 19%, beating Chinese rivals, according to the technology industry analysis firm Canalys. Vivo Mobile Communication Co. and Xiaomi Inc. made up 18% and 17%, respectively, while Realme accounted for 12%.
