South Korea’s Samsung Display Co. announced the world’s first 17-inch slidable display PC prototype at the Intel Innovation developer conference held in San Jose, California Sept. 27-28, declaring that the era of the slidable display is just beginning and the foldable display era is over.

Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-sun (JS Choi) made an appearance during the keynote session of the annual tech event Tuesday with a 13-inch display PC prototype. Choi said he would perform “magic,” pulling one edge of the screen and horizontally extending the display to 17 inches.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger also demonstrated the new technology, saying that he saw the screen prototype for the first time during his trip to Korea in May.

"It's very important for Samsung Display to collaborate between ecosystem developers in hardware and software together to achieve these kind of innovative form factor PCs for best user scenarios," Choi said at the event.

"This device will satisfy viewers' need for larger screens as well as portability," the Samsung Display CEO said. In the future users will be able to extend the screen at the press of a button, he said in the press conference after the event.

During the event, Intel showcased Unison, which is a new software solution embedded in the slidable screen. Unison connects PCs and smartphones to manage file transfers, calls, text messages and phone notifications.

At Display Week 2022 held in May in San Jose, Samsung Display introduced its 12.4-inch slidable display with a panel that can reduce the horizontal screen to 8.1 inches.

At the tradeshow, the Korean display maker also showcased a 6.7-inch screen that slides vertically. The functionality and small size of the screen are advantageous for working on documents and social media posts, Samsung Display said.
