Lotte E&C develops low-carbon cement construction

Lotte Engineering & Construction (E&C) said on Tuesday developed carbon dioxide-infused mortar technology for flooring with Hanil Cement Co.

Mortar, a construction material made by mixing cement with additives, is used in this new technology to inject highly concentrated carbon dioxide captured from industrial processes into the mortar mix.

By using this technology, the density of the mortar increases, enhancing its strength by about 5% while reducing cement consumption by 3%, thus lowering carbon emissions.

Lotte E&C explained that using this technology to build a 1,000-unit apartment complex would have the same environmental impact as planting 11,360 pine trees that are 30 years old.

In the technology’s development process, Hanil Cement developed the carbon dioxide injection equipment and placement technology, while Lotte E&C established material performance and quality standards. It also conducted quality verification through a trial in Aug. this year.

Lotte E&C became the first construction company to apply this technology on-site last Wed., with plans to expand its application moving forward.
