Chunsa International Film Festival

Chunsa International Film Festival is an annual Asian movie festival hosted by Korea Film Directors’ Society, in memory of the late Na Woon-Gyu (1902-1937). Na, well known under his pen name Chunsa, was a pioneer film director in Korea and an independence activist against Japan’s colonial rule in Korea in the1920s. The nonprofit film festival aims to overcome the existing commercialism and disputes on the fairness of awards in the movie industry and to give film artists, industry professionals and viewers the opportunity to enjoy films together.

Chunsa’s Life

In his short 35-year life, Chunsa showed originality in cinema and the arts while demonstrating his Korean national philosophy. Commemorating his spirit, the festival aims to lead the creative future direction of the Korean movie industry.

The festival aims to overcome commercialisms and disputes on the fairness of awards in the movie industry, thus deeply exploring human stories and reflecting them in movies.

Authority of the Festival

Premiering a diverse number of Asian movies, Chunsa Film Festival is the only Korean movie film where the grand prize is for Best Director. Bong Joon-ho, director of the world-renowned film Parasite, visited Chunsa Film Festival first just after winning the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
