The Bank of Korea announced on Friday that it has appointed Ryoo Sang-dae, the current vice president of Korea Housing-Finance Corp., as its new senior deputy governor. His term will last for three years from Aug. 21 to Aug. 20, 2026.

The deputy governor of the Bank of Korea is a position appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the governor of the bank and also serves as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee. Ryoo, the newly appointed senior deputy governor, graduated from Seoul National University's Department of Economics and joined the Bank of Korea in 1986.

Throughout his career, he has held key positions in departments like Financial Markets, International Affairs and International Cooperation. From May 2018 to May 2021, he served as the assistant deputy governor in charge of International Finance and Cooperation.

According to the Bank of Korea, during his time as the head of the International Cooperation Department, Ryoo played a leading role in currency swap agreements with Canada and Switzerland. After becoming the assistant deputy governor, he oversaw the currency swap agreement between South Korea and the United States in response to the spread of COVID-19.

Since joining as the vice president of Korea Housing-Finance Corporation in July 2021, Ryoo has contributed to the housing finance supply by improving policy mortgage systems and guarantee systems and securing the foundation for issuing asset-backed securities.

The Bank of Korea praised Ryoo's outstanding achievements and capabilities in the fields of international finance and cooperation, recognizing his contributions to domestic and foreign exchange stability and policy collaboration with major central banks.
