South Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis Co. said Thursday that 10 of its new technologies received or or are finalists for awards from external organizations this year, enhancing its reputation for automotive safety and convenience.

The unit of Hyundai Motor Group has won the PACE Award from US' industry media Automotive News for the first time. The award honors superior innovation, technological advancement and business performances of global automakers and car parts companies.

The US news outlet noted Hyundai Mobis’ rear wheel steering system that allows the left and right rear wheels to move independently in different directions within 10 degrees. The Korean auto parts maker said the technology improves stability and comfort by reducing the turning radius by up to 25%.

The company’s panorama sunroof airbag and in-wheel system are among the finalists for other 2023 PACE Awards.

The panorama sunroof airbag is installed inside the sunroof and is deployed forward from the rear of the car.

The airbag can reduce the risk of injury by preventing passengers from being thrown from the sunroof in case of an accident or sudden stop. It has been selected as a new excellent technology (NET) by the Korea Industrial Technology Association and state-run Korean Agency for Technology and Standards.

The in-wheel system allows the motor to directly control each wheel. It maximizes driving efficiency without the need to install a separate power transmission component, such as a drive shaft, Hyundai Mobis said.

The company expects the two finalists to win the awards in early 2024.

In addition, the company’s multi-chamber air suspension system has been named as an excellent industrial technology by the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.

Air suspension absorbs vibrations by using high pressure air, instead of metal springs. The multi-chamber system subdivides the air storage space to customize the ride to the current driving conditions.

The company’s smart air suspension, which automatically adjusts the height of vehicle to road conditions, and the electric steering attached to the side of the wheels to change direction both received the IR52 Jang Young-shil Award from Korea Industrial Technology Association.

Hyundai Mobis said will accelerate its transformation into a “mobility platform provider” that integrates hardware and software by developing its technical know-how and competitiveness in key auto parts into a large-scale platform.
