Hyundai Motor Co. said on Wednesday that its G80 electric vehicle model received the highest rating of Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) in a crash test disclosed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) of the United States.
IIHS, a non-profit organization founded in 1959, compiles the performance of crash, safety, and prevention tests on vehicle models out on the US market and announces the results every year.
IIHS is famous for its safety evaluation with the most stringent standards, such as introducing a small overlap test that appraises safety by crashing only part of the front section of the vehicle.
Vehicles with the highest level of safety are given a TSP+ rating. To receive the rating, the vehicle must get a rating of good or above in all six crash safety categories including driver's seat small overlap, front passenger seat small overlap, frontal collision, side collision, roof strength, and head restraint.
In addition, it must be advanced or higher in the frontal collision prevention system test and acceptable or higher in the headlight test.
The G80 EV model received a "good" grade in the evaluation of all six crash safety items, and a "superior" grade in the test of the frontal collision prevention system. The headlight test results were "acceptable" in all trims.
With the addition of the G80 EV model, Genesis rose to the TSP+ rating for all models, including sedans (G70, G80, and G90) and SUVs (GV60, GV70, and GV80).
