KT, Vector Institute to cooperate for hyperscale AI

South Korea's KT Corp. announced on Wednesday that it has been in talks with Canada's Vector Institute to explore collaborative opportunities in the hyperscale AI sector.

The discussions took place on Sept. 5 at KT's Convergence Technology Center in Seoul's Seocho-gu district.

KT and the Vector Institute, which previously entered into a partnership agreement for AI research and business development in Sept. 2022, have been collaborating on joint AI research projects.

The recent meeting saw KT's AI2XL Research Institute Director Bae Soon-min and Vector Institute CEO Tony Gaffney formalize plans to advance their hyperscale AI technology, known as Mi:dm.

The two organizations also reviewed plans for B2B initiatives based on hyperscale AI, touching upon AI model development, as well as educational and consulting services.

"We are focused on leveraging Mi:dm to accelerate the industry's digital transformation," Director Bae stated, adding that the partnership with the Vector Institute will "not only strengthen KT’s AI technical capabilities but also provide insights into global AI trends to make Mi:dm more competitive."

Established in 2017 through a collaboration between the Ontario government and private sector companies, the Vector Institute has gained recognition as a world-leading AI research organization.

Jeffrey Hinton, a pioneer and foremost authority in the fields of AI and deep learning, co-founded the institute and currently serves as a senior advisor.
