LG, FuriosaAI to jointly develop next-generation AI chip

LG AI Research Institute announced on Wednesday its strategic alliance with FuriosaAI, South Korea’s fabless chip designer. The partnership aims to jointly explore and commercialize future AI semiconductors and generative AI technologies.

This collaboration's core mission is to build an advanced AI semiconductor, potent enough to facilitate the operation of colossal AI models. To achieve this, the partners will map out a technological collaboration blueprint and broaden their cooperative scope.

Within this partnership framework, LG AI Research Institute will ascertain the commercial potential of generative AI technologies using FuriosaAI's second-generation AI semiconductor, Renegade, underpinned by the hyperscale AI Exaone platform.

The combined research will be supervised by Im Woo-hyung, the head of the Applied AI Research Group at the LG AI Research Institute. In cooperation with FuriosaAI, they will examine potential business models.

FuriosaAI, an industry-leading firm that designs optimized AI semiconductors to ensure the stable functioning of large-scale AI models, intends to incorporate assessments and feedback from the LG AI Research Institute into the design, development and mass production stages.

AI processors, also known as neural processing units (NPU), are applauded for their superior data processing speed and efficiency compared to central processing units (CPU) and graphics processing units (GPUs). This enhances the potential for revolutionary breakthroughs in the AI sector.

Meanwhile, FuriosaAI is gearing up to initiate mass production of its second-generation AI architecture, Renegade, in the first half of the upcoming year, strengthening its market standing.
