Steel giant POSCO Group has embarked on the development of an AI chatbot for internal use amid growing concerns about data leaks through generative AI platforms like ChatGPT.

POSCO’s AI tool is an upgrade to the ChatGPT app it introduced to its internal computer network in March, according to industry sources on Sunday.

POSCO Holdings Inc. is spearheading the development of a super AI system jointly with its research institute and POSCO DX Co., a software developer.

This super AI will collect internal and external data and find exact matches for searches in a dialogue format like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Earlier this month, Samsung Electronics Co. announced a ban on the use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for its smartphone and home appliance divisions, after an accidental data leak.

Instead, the world’s No.1 memory chipmaker is jointly developing a generative AI with Naver Corp. for use by its semiconductor division employees.

LG Electronics Inc. is joining Samsung in blocking access to AI chatbot platforms such as ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing starting later this week.

LG Group has been using its proprietary super AI, Exaone.

POSCO expects its super AI development to improve operational efficiency while easing worries about data and technology leaks.

It will slash data-search time needed for research journals, patents and specialty publications, particularly for its growth businesses such as rechargeable battery materials.
