Samsung Electronics Co. and Sungkyunkwan University will jointly establish a new Department of Intelligent Software, a contract-based academic department with a guarantee to land jobs after graduation. It is intended to nurture specialized talents related to artificial intelligence (AI).

Samsung Electronics and Sungkyunkwan University said on Sunday that they held a contract-signing ceremony for establishing the Department of Intelligent Software at the latter's Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon last Thursday. The event was attended by Park Hak-gyu, head of Samsung Electronics' management support office, and Shin Dong-ryeol, president of Sungkyunkwan University.

The department will be run as a combined five-year BA/MS program at the university's College of Software Convergence. It plans to admit 50 new students every year from 2024.

Students will receive undergraduate-level theory and practical education in the field of AI and software for seven semesters. In the final three semesters, they will focus on acquiring advanced AI capabilities through in-depth programs at the master's level.

After graduating, the students will work for Samsung Electronics. Full scholarships will be provided to the students under the industry-academia collaboration.

Various on-the-job training opportunities such as participation in Samsung's internship programs, trips to Samsung's overseas research centers, and visits to first-class overseas academic conferences will also be provided.
