LG Group think tank unveils breakthrough AI tech Exaone

LG AI Research, the artificial intelligence (AI) think tank of South Korea's LG Group, on Thursday unveiled Exaone, a gigantic AI technology that rapidly learns information from papers and patents and forms a database.

The institute said Exaone is an innovative breakthrough for conquering difficult problems such as disease and energy through the rapid reading and learning of text, formulas, tables and images in papers, as well as reading chemical formulas. Basically, the invention allows easier accumulation of human knowledge as data, and more sophisticated learning data will greatly ease the development of new drugs and materials.

The think tank is collaborating with LG affiliates and domestic and foreign partners to apply AI to industrial sites. LG Electronics Inc. began to apply AI to its weekly forecasts of product sales demand by country and region, and LG Innotek used the technology to cut the time needed to center a camera lens and sensor by over 50%.

The institute also introduced an AI model for finding customized neoantigens for anti-cancer vaccines that predicts neoantigens for inducing the death of cancer cells by using data on a patient's genetics and carcinogen mutations. This prediction model is expected to far outperform others by slashing the time needed to develop a customized anti-cancer vaccine.

"The role of 'expert AI' pursued by LG is cooperation with humans to solve difficult human problems and creation of 'new and unprecedented customer value,'" LG AI Research Chief Bae Kyung-hoon said. "Our research seeks the goal of achieving 'Universal AI,' or expert AI for solving complicated problems in the real world and boosting optimized decision-making through the use of global knowledge in real time."
